Her Honour Judge Mary Ann Yeats received her B. Juris. with First Class Honours and her L.L.B. with Honours from the University of Western Australia.
She was admitted to practice in 1982 and was employed by the Government of Western Australia where she practiced in the Crown Law Department. Her practice involved administrative, civil and constitutional law as well as criminal prosecutions.
In 1989 she was appointed Senior Assistant Crown Counsel. In July 1993 she was appointed a Judge of the District Court of Western Australia. She served as President of the Children's Court of Western Australia for 12 months in 1995.
In 1997, she was elected to the Council of the Australian Institute for Judicial Administration.
Since 1999 she has convened the AIJA National Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Committee which is involved in providing cultural awareness training for judicial officers in Australia.
She has published in the areas of Prison Disciplinary Procedures, Fresh Evidence, Bail and Community Based Corrections and Western Australia's Three Strikes legislation.
